Supreme Court decision to block Affirmative Action: Cons

Writer: Shreya S.Shreya S.

Affirmative action has been a contentious topic in the United States for decades. This policy aims to mitigate the effects of historical discrimination by providing equal opportunities for underrepresented individuals in education and employment. In this blog post, we will discuss some of the most significant and surprising potential outcomes of the Supreme Court's decision to block affirmative action.

1. Decreased Diversity in Higher Education

One of the most obvious outcomes of blocking affirmative action is a decrease in the diversity of students in higher education. By removing affirmative action policies, universities are not incentivized to seek out and enroll students from underrepresented backgrounds, leading to less diverse student bodies. This lack of diversity has negative consequences for all students, as it limits exposure to different perspectives and hinders academic growth. Furthermore, students from underrepresented groups miss out on the crucial life-changing opportunity to attend a prestigious university, further contributing to socio-economic inequality.

2. Reinvigoration of Prejudice

While affirmative action is supposed to be a solution to discrimination, blocking it can have the opposite effect. By limiting diversity and opportunity, the lack of affirmative action allows prejudice and bias to reinforce and grow in society. The lack of exposure to different backgrounds and perspectives can lead to individuals avoiding people they believe are "different" rather than embracing diversity and creating new ideas. This can lead to increased criticism and stereotyping, thereby fueling existing systemic inequalities.

3. The Effect on Employment

The Supreme Court decision has had a significant impact on employment opportunities for minority groups. Without affirmative action policies in place, underrepresented groups often find it challenging to secure jobs in companies and organizations. This dynamic can continue the trend of "like hires like" and hinder companies' ability to attract a diverse candidate pool. This outcome contributes to perpetuating inequality throughout American society.

4. Limiting Access to Education

The decision to block affirmative action causes a ripple effect and limits access to education for many underrepresented individuals, particularly those from low-income and minority backgrounds. The lack of diversity in the classroom has a direct impact on the curriculum and educational experience- without roles for diverse perspectives (which affirmative action supports), there is a colder learning environment. This limitation of access further perpetuates systemic inequalities in American society.

5. Requiring Legal Assistance

Blocking affirmative action opens the door to significant legal action that can challenge the civil rights of minorities. In the absence of policies that seek to balance out preferences and provide representation for underrepresented people, there is a potential for considerable legal challenges rising. Even when working to fix long-standing discriminatory practices, agencies might find themselves in difficult circumstances due to the current state of the law.

6. Increased Segregation in Colleges and Universities

Without affirmative action, colleges and universities may become more segregated, as students are sorted by race and ethnicity. This could lead to a number of negative consequences, including decreased opportunities for interaction and understanding between different groups.

7. Increased Social Unrest

The abolition of affirmative action could lead to increased social unrest, as minority groups feel that they are being denied opportunities that are available to other groups. This could manifest itself in protests, demonstrations, and other forms of civil disobedience.

In sum, the Supreme Court's decision to block affirmative action has had severe consequences for various communities in America. Those outcomes include decreased diversity in higher education, reinvigoration of prejudice, negative effect on employment opportunities, limitation of access to education, requiring legal assistance to protect civil rights, Increased Segregation in Colleges and Universities, and increased Social Unrest. This is a divisive issue that requires in-depth consideration to achieve a nuanced approach that advances fairness and equal opportunities for all in American society. As the conversation continues around affirmative action, it ought to include thoughtful consideration of the variety of effects it can produce and the intention behind the policy.
